How to use Inverse Blur in Pimloc Redact

Inverse blur keeps one person or object clear and blurs everything else in the video. This page explains when to use it, how to turn it on for a track, and how to check the result with Preview.

What Inverse Blur does

Normal redaction hides the people and objects you choose and leaves the rest of the video as it is. Inverse blur does the opposite. The track you choose stays clear, like a spotlight, and everything around it is hidden.

Use it when only one person needs to be seen. For example, a busy street where you're sharing footage of one person, or a room full of people where only the person speaking should be identifiable. It's much quicker than finding and redacting everyone else one by one.

Inverse blur affects the whole video, not just the frames the person is in. Once a track uses it, every frame is hidden apart from the spotlit person or object. If they aren't on screen in a frame, that whole frame is hidden.

How to use Inverse Blur

  1. Select the person or object. Click their box on the video, or their row in the Timeline.

    • The track must be redacted for inverse blur to work. A redacted track shows an orange, crossed-out eye next to its label. If the eye is open, click it or press R to redact the track.

  2. Click Track settings in the tools on the left.

  3. Tick Inverse blur. On the timeline, the track's bar turns blue and shows the label Inverse blur, so you can see which tracks are spotlit.

To turn it off, select the track again and untick Inverse blur.

Check the result with Preview

Click Preview under the video, or press B. The video shows how it will look when you export it: the spotlit person stays clear and everything else is hidden.

Everything around the person is hidden in the video's redaction style. With Black Box, the rest of the frame is black. With Smooth or Pixelated, it's blurred or pixelated. To change the style, open Redact settings.

Step through the video with Preview on before you export. Check that the box stays on the person in every frame, because any part of them outside the box is hidden. To fix a box that drifts, see How to track an object.

Find tracks that use inverse blur

To show only spotlit tracks on the timeline, click Filter in the Timeline Toolbar and choose Inverse blur under Track settings.

Spotlight more than one person

You can turn on inverse blur for more than one track. Every spotlit person stays clear, and everything else is hidden.
