How to redact a fixed area of a video with a zone in Pimloc Redact

A zone is a box that stays in the same place on the video for as long as you choose.

When to use a Zone

Most boxes in Pimloc Redact follow a person or object as it moves. A zone doesn't move. It covers the same part of the screen on every frame, from the start time to the end time you set.

Use a zone when:

  • Something doesn't move, such as a screen, a whiteboard, a sign or a document on a desk.

  • You need to cover a whole part of the screen, such as a corner that shows a name or a car registration in a recording's overlay.

To follow something that moves, use Tracker on the Timeline Toolbar instead. See Tracker for more.

How to create a Zone

1) Open the Timeline tab at the bottom of the editor.

2) Click Zone on the Timeline Toolbar, or press Z.

3) The video pauses and a message at the top of it says Draw a box to create the zone. Preview turns off, so you can see the video you're drawing on. Drag a box on the video around the area you want to cover.

4) Choose how long the zone lasts. When you let go, a new Zone pop up appears above the box:

  • Whole video covers the video from start to end. It's chosen for you.

  • Set time lets you type a start and end time instead. Each one is in minutes, seconds and milliseconds, for example 00:10:000 for 10 seconds in. They start with the whole video, so you only need to change the end you want to move.

N.B.: A zone can last up to 2 hours. If the times you type are longer than that, the boxes turn red, a message says Max 2 hours, and you can't save the zone until you shorten it. For a video longer than 2 hours, Whole video isn't available. The zone starts at the frame you drew it on and lasts 2 hours, and you can change both times.

5) Check the box covers what you need. You can move or resize it now. The zone stays the same on every frame, so a change on one frame changes it everywhere.

6) Click the tick, or press Enter, to save the zone. Until you save it, the zone shows on the timeline as a yellow band in a row called New zone, at the top. The band covers the time the zone lasts, so you can check it before you save.

Click the cross, or press Esc, to discard it. The tick and cross at the right of the timeline save or discard the zone, the same as the ones above the box.

7) The zone becomes a track in its own row on the timeline, and it's redacted. You can change it like any other track: redact or unredact it, split it, or delete it.
